Which burns more calories…

…running a marathon in 2 hours and then lying down for 2 hours, or running a marathon in 4 hours?  I feel my A-Level physics should help answer this question, but alas, I cannot remember any of it.

The question is wholly hypothetical, you understand, as the chances of me running a marathon in either time are so slim as to be non-existent.

As for Juneathon day 3, a one mile run around the block means that it’s in the bag.

    I think the first!

I want to believe the second just because I want to believe that there was something good behind my 5hours effort!!

  3. shazruns says:

Some one needs to invent a way for the second to burn more calories surely an idea for Dragon’s Den

Arrghh! You can’t ask a question like that and then leave it unanswered! Its being driving me mad, so I had to research it.

No idea how accurate this site is but found this on the Internet (http://www.brianmac.co.uk/energyexp.htm). Working with the same weight, 65kg, and working with a 3 hour marathon (approx) vs 4 hour marathon (approx), it would appear the 3 hour runner would burn approximately 500 more calories, plus have the lie down as well! (3060 calories (3hr) vs 2592 calories (4hr))

  5. Now that’s a great question. What if you run a marathon and no-one sees you, did you really run the marathon? Meaty philosophical stuff for a Friday night.

  6. Setting the calories burned aside for a sec. I believe that a slower steadier pace actually burns off a higher percentage of body fat than a fast pace does! No idea where I read that though, sorry.
