Social networking

I spent most of today at a Practical Action supporters’ day with my mother.  In one of the workshops, Practical Action staff described how they were trying to reach out to a new generation of supporters via social networking sites like facebook, twitter and linked in.

One of the older participants tutted.  How dreadful, he muttered, that people email and text and communicate electronically when they could be having real conversations with real people.

Well, Juneathoners, he doesn’t know what he’s missing!  This morning, I was lucky enough to run Brockwell parkrun with Disjointed Tales.  But for social networking, our paths would never have crossed.  I have also run Finsbury parkrun with Fortnight Flo and Shazruns, Cambridge parkrun with Sooozie and Tony parkrunner and at Greenwich parkrun I bumped into Helsbels.

As well as these, Pyro’s Yard, Maggiee, Fairweather Runner, Plustenner, Fattipuff, Bad Wabbit Tales and Insert Clever Running Pun Here have all mentioned meeting at their local parkruns, should I be crossing them off my list at any point.

Through Juneathon, I have found a community choc-full of great people, in doses that a confirmed introvert like me can cope with.

Long live social networking,

Great to hear that you two had a good time today. I think you had the best weather of Day 11 [looks outside at torrential rain]. And I do feel inspired to print out that barcode that I’ve had for months now and find myself a Park Run. Do let us know when you are planning to do Norman Park so we can welcome you there (if indeed we have got round to it by then!!!)

  8. Giselle says:

  11. Hels says:

Here here! Totally agree with you. I’ve met some wonderful people through social networking (your good self included) and I would go as far to say that the support from everyone was a vital part of completing a marathon!

  12. I’m contemplating visiting my nearest Parkrun (Whitstable) on a Saturday morning soon. I think the thing that’s putting me off is….I’d like the marshalls to be home in time for lunch, and if I’m running…they may not be :-(. Well done on the sub 29xx

  13. fortnightflo says:
